Although he is known as the "Father of Acadia" and a founder of the oldest national park east of the Mississippi
River, George Bucknam Dorr's seminal contributions to the American environmental movement have gone
largely unacknowledged. This is the story of Dorr's pioneering role in the establishment and development of a
unique conservation model that dovetailed with the evolution of the US National Park Service.
Raised in Boston as a member of New England's elite merchant class, Dorr adopted Maine's Mount Desert
Island as his home and the setting to apply the practical lessons of "Boston Brahmin" philanthropy, transforming
an elitist social inheritance into an all-consuming commitment to conservation.
The first biography of Dorr ever written, Creating Acadia National Park is based on painstaking research both in
the US and abroad, including federal, state, and private archives. Newly-discovered and uncatalogued sources
are supplemented by in-person interviews.

Dear Brian Kevin,
As requested, here are the ACP events I've currently scheduled after June:
1. The Contributions of Ellsworth Attorney John A. Peters to the "Father of Acadia"
July 28 6:00 p.m.
Free
Ellsworth Public Library
207-667-6363
An exploration of the influences of John A. Peters to the development of the
national park on Mount Desert Island, including the role of Peters as executor
of the estate of G.B. Dorr.
2. Writing about Conservation Giants: Two Decades of Living With Charles W. Eliot,
George B. Dorr, and John D. Rockefeller Jr.
August 3 5:30 p.m.
Free
Northeast Harbor Public Library
207-276-3333
The benefits and pitfalls of researching, writing, and editing the thoughts and activities
of three powerful philanthropists whose gift to America was Acadia National Park.
3. Surprising Revelations: Intimacies in Letters Between Charles W. Eliot, George B. Dorr,
and John D. Rockefeller Jr.
August 10 7:00 p.m.
Free
Jesup Memorial Library
207-288-4245
Buried in the extensive correspondence between these three conservationists are deeply
personal expressions of their feelings about one another, too often dismissed as mere
sentimentality. Examples of such intimacy will be read, discussed, and related to the
growth and development of Acadia National Park.
4. My Two Decades of Writing About Acadia's Founder
August 18 7:00 p.m.
Free
Blue Hill Public Library
207-374-5515
Partnering with Charles W. Eliot, John D. Rockefeller Jr. and others, it was the persistence
and force of personality over four decades that resulted in the Acadia National Park that
George B. Dorr left to America on his death in 1944. The research and writing process that led to
the new biography of Dorr will be explained.
Please contact me if additional information is needed.

scholarly publishing and academic library leadership. His research over the last two
decades into the Massachusetts families that influenced the development of conservation
philanthropy has resulted in numerous talks and publications for Acadia National Park,
Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations, Mount Desert Island Historical Society,
and many other organizations. He served as a consultant for the Ken Burns documentary
America's Best Idea: the National Parks and has uncovered and inventoried hidden

"George B. Dorr has always been more myth than man. He is seen off in the distance
striding purposefully along a trail, or standing, pensively, atop a mountain ridge looking to
the distant horizon. Known locally as the father of Acadia, George Dorr was largely
unknown nationally until now. With this biography, Dr. Ronald Epp eloquently brings
George Dorr's life and accomplishments onto a national stage. Weaving threads of the
cultural, intellectual and historical milieu in which Dorr lived, Epp's writing is both
scholarly and engaging.
"From Dorr's background as a member of an important family of proper Bostonians, Epp
traces the tapestry of events and individuals who shaped Dorr's thinking and work,
culminating in the creation of a national park. We are constantly reminded of George
Dorr's accomplishments with every walk or hike through Acadia; we marvel at him even
more when turning every page of Epp's well researched and fascinating account."
-Rebecca Cole-Will, Acadia National Park Chief of Resource Management
"We are very fortunate to have Ronald Epp's timely work at the 100th anniversary of the
park and the National Park Service. Epp's extensive research provides new insights into the
life of George B. Dorr, which Epp carefully weaves into the remarkable story of the
founding of Acadia National Park. Epp documents Dorr's abilities to collaborate, his
persistence, indefatigable spirit, and belief in preservation for future generations. Readers
will be inspired to reflect on how the dedication of one person can influence the enjoyment
and enrichment of millions."
-Margaret Coffin Brown, Historical Landscape Architect at the NPS Olmsted Center for
Landscape Preservation and author of Pathmakers: Cultural Landscape Report for the
Historic Hiking Trail System of Mount Desert Island.
"A wonderful gift for all who love Acadia, bringing to life the man who, more than any
other, was responsible for the park's creation and early growth. We also learn about the
many others, unknown today, whose support and expertise were indispensable, and how
the creation of Acadia fits into the story of our other national parks. Based on wide-ranging
research, Epp describes Dorr's upbringing, education, wide-ranging family and social
connections, and preservation philosophy, all of which played a crucial role in the Acadia
story. Even those who know Acadia well will learn much from this valuable book."
-William C. Clendaniel, a six-decade visitor to Acadia and formerly Deputy Director of The
Trustees of Reservations in Massachusetts, President & CEO of Mount Auburn Cemetery,
and board chair of the Massachusetts Historical Society
"Here is the untold story of the making of Acadia National Park and the critical role of
George B. Dorr, a passionate lover of the natural world and, in particular, Mount Desert
Island in Maine. This book reveals the fascinating story of Dorr's collaboration with

Book Description:
Although he is known as the "Father of Acadia" and a founder of the oldest national park
east of the Mississippi River, George Bucknam Dorr's seminal contributions to the
American environmental movement have gone largely unacknowledged. Even today, those
who live in or visit the coastal Maine communities surrounding Acadia National Park do
not fully realize the scope of his achievements. This biography is the story of Dorr's
pioneering role in the establishment and development of a unique conservation model that
dovetailed with the evolution of the US National Park Service-which shares its 2016
centennial with Acadia.Raised in Boston as a member of New England's elite merchant
class, Dorr adopted Maine's Mount Desert Island as his home and the setting to apply the
practical lessons of "Boston Brahmin" philanthropy that tracked back to his maternal
grandfather, banker and Harvard College Treasurer Thomas Wren Ward. Yet through his
finest work-the creation and management of Acadia National Park-and through his
collaborations with park co-founders Charles W. Eliot, John D. Rockefeller Jr., and
others-Dorr transformed an elitist social inheritance into an all-consuming commitment
to conservation. One hundred years after its founding, this national treasure is visited,
enjoyed, and beloved by millions every year. The first biography of George B. Dorr ever
written, Creating Acadia National Park: the Biography of George Bucknam Dorr is based

Hello Ron:
Congratulations on the publication! Perfect timing! I will order a copy & I look forward to both reading it and having it inscribed by
the distinguished author.
We are planning an early October flying trip to MDI for a wedding and a driving trip to Maryland for another wedding. I assume you
will be back in PA by then - so perhaps we can get together for another dinner during our Maryland trip the last week of September
Again, congratulations. Enjoy the "book tours" and thank you for your unique, important and permanent contribution to the history of
both Acadia and the American landscape conservation movement. Well done Professor!
Best wishes, Ed

I've rented in Blue Hill at Parker Ridge Retirement Community a cottage so

Ron;
Two weeks ago I walked into Sherman's and picked up your book. At the register I told the teenage clerk, "I am really looking forward to
reading this, he is a friend." The quick-witted young lady (feigning the presumption that I was referring to the subject and not the author) gave
me a brief stare and then said to her co-worker - "Wow - this man was a friend of Mr. Dorr!" Bobbye, of course, thought it was hilarious -
quickly pointing out that the young lady had obviously assessed my age at perhaps 95 or older.
I just finished the book. I even read the sixty pages of footnotes. (I have never done that before.) Excellent work professor! What a
magnificent gift you have given to Acadia's 2nd Century and beyond.
As you know, it was Plutarch who wrote: "The world of men is best captured through the lives of the men who created history". At long
last, the heretofore "foggy", incomplete, (and in some instances mythical), story of Mr. Dorr and his collaborators has met the scholarly research
and lucid pen of a most persistent and detailed biographer. Thank You and Congratulations!

Cookie Horner, co-chair of the Acadia Centennial Task Force, and her husband, William, plan a personal real-life Acadia

Hailing from all over the world, Acadia Centennial Trekkers are all over the 100-mile virtual map, starting at Cadillac and
ending in Southwest Harbor at the finish line of the real-life Mount Desert Island Marathon.
At the Acadia Centennial Trek meet-up last week at Side Street Café, some of the participants sent along photos of the finisher's medal they've earned,
so they could be there in spirit, if not in reality: Virtual Trekker @Jaimee88 of Boston (the first participant to receive a medal), @Mac (the first
international recipient of the medal), and the Hermanns of Maryland, who go by the Trek names of @RAH47 (Robert) and @Star (Helena).
Maybe it's the love for Acadia or the longing for community that binds the Acadia Centennial Trekkers. People who've never met in real life but who
know each other by their virtual Trek names appreciate it when another Trekker "likes" their latest mileage update and description. Julie and Roger
Grindle (@Grin and @Grinny) were sorry that @TrailWitch, a prolific "liker," couldn't attend the meet-up.

Meaning of the Trek, in the year of the Acadia Centennial
Or maybe it's the sense of purpose, whether the goal of getting more fit, earning an Acadia Centennial finisher's medal, or helping to support the park,
that connects the Trekkers.
As
meet-up guest speaker Gary Allen, founder of the MDI Marathon and The Great Run on Great Cranberry Island, and an honorary Acadia Centennial
Trekker, said last week, there's more meaning to a trek, however you define it, when there's a deeper purpose.
The examples Allen gave came from his own experience:
Instead of running a race for another attempt at a personal record, he ran 700 miles from
Cadillac to Washington, DC, in 2013, to raise more than $37,000 for wounded veterans, the
American Cancer Society and victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.
And instead of being content with having started MDI Marathon in 2002 and extending the
season into late October, he launched a free Millinocket Marathon & Half last December to try

College of the Atlantic, Chimani with own version of Acadia trek
That sense of meaning and purpose seems to also be driving other forms of Acadia-related treks, not just the virtual Acadia Centennial Trek with its
medal to help raise funds for the park. They, too, coincidentally center around logging miles in Acadia.

Meaning of the Trek, in the year of the Acadia Centennial
For example, today, June 11, the College of the Atlantic is hosting a 44-point Relay for COA for alumni, with
the goal of getting 44% of alumni to give by the end of the fiscal year on June 30. The trek began at the
whale skull on the college campus and goes through downtown Bar Harbor, along the ocean, and points in
Acadia. There are hiking and bicycling legs of the relay, which began at 5:30 a.m. and expected to end after
8 p.m.
In the Spring 2016 issue of the Friends of Acadia Journal, Kerry Gallivan, CEO of Chimani, a national parks
app, announced a partnership with Friends of Acadia and the park to allow participants in the annual
Acadia Quest to use the app to log their challenges, rather than the usual paper-and-pencil route.
In addition, he announced a new digital 100-mile Acadia Centennial Challenge badge, which gets unlocked
on the Chimani Acadia app after the mileage has been reached. This year's Centennial edition of the Acadia
Quest encourages kids and their families to explore the park's 100-year history and inspire conservation
for the next 100 years.

In Ronald H. Epp's new biography of Dorr, "Creating Acadia National

Today, in the year of the Acadia Centennial, let us not just 'walk and talk' on the trails of Acadia. Let us walk the walk,
no matter how we define the Trek. And let us find meaning and purpose, whether it be to give back to Acadia, to
find deeper appreciation of the park, or to use the trails, both real and virtual, to get more fit or find community.
And why not also earn the Acadia Centennial finisher's medal, however you're defining your Trek, and help raise

Hi Ron
I enjoyed your book talk at the Jesup. It's wonderful to know more about Dorr, even with so many questions remaining about
him.
I am offering a few questions below that I hope you may be able to answer--either in response to this email or by telephone if
you can offer up a good time or two to call. Here they are...
1. Do you have any firm sense of how George Dorr felt about wildness? Did he ever show any support for the George Pepper
school of thought on JDR Jrs. carriage roads? I wonder if he was at all conflicted about this in his partnership with
Rockefeller.
2. Is there any evidence that he ever talked to or communicated with Percival Baxter.? Baxter did visit MDI at least once, I
think in the teens or 20s.
3. Was the Beehive part of the original Homans gift? The 1911 path map shows yes but in your text it seemed unclear to me.

4. Did Dorr meet Teddy Roosevelt when Roosevelt visited MDI, or have any more direct communication with him?
5. Do you have a favorite quote or two from Dorr, especially re his conservation philosophy?
6. Did Dorr lobby the federal government to pass legislation to accept gifts of land from private citizens? I thought I read
that in the book, but now can't find it. It seemed like there was precedent with Kent and the Muir Woods gift several years
earlier, suggesting this was not needed and that the way had been cleared for him to donate the lands.
7. Is the story about the SDM spring purchase a true story?
8. I'd like to look at some original sources for fun. Can you recommend a few? I'm thinking the SDM papers and the Nat Geo
article for starters.
Thanks again for such an enjoyable and important book. I look forward to hearing from you, and would be happy to call about
these at a good time for you.
Charlie

Hi Maureen & Gerry,
I hope you two are having a fantastic time!
Thanks for letting me know that you watched the Jesup event. I didn't know it was being recorded until the event was over--and I still
have yet to find it on the web. Jack Russell and I were on WABI-TV the day before still high about the splendid review that Earl Brechlin
wrote
in the Islander. I was also phone-interviewed that week by the Bangor Daily News and the review that appeared the day after the Jesup
event
focused more on my experience with Lizzie of falling in love with Acadia and the project. On Saturday another phone interview with a
journalist at DownEast for their June issue on the National Parks. Busy week! And to add to all of this, unknown to me Lisa planned a
Wednesday evening celebration at McKays for seventeen of us--we missed you, and Aimee too. Ron Beard was a delight at the Jesup
and McKays and promises us an outline of discussion points before the interview on the 22nd.
I much appreciate your being in contact about all of this from afar; I sent your last email to Ruth who was delighted to know that you
had tapped into the Jesup "from halfway around the world."
Most Warmly,

Ron,
I was so sorry to miss your celebration last Thursday. We had just arrived home at 11pm from a 2-week family ( a voyage home that
started at 4 am that morning, in another country!)
What a wonderful turnout! I'm so happy for you! I cannot wait to get my hands on a final copy of the book. After all these years, it's
complete :-) Hard to imagine it was 15 years ago when you were photocopying documents at the Abbe Museum, my first "professional"
job!
Are you coming back up this summer? I'm sure there must be more celebrations and book signings. I would love to meet up. I also
wanted to fill you in on the Gleason photos here at Acadia we have been hard at work this winter....good news for
sure!
All the best, Marie

Hi Ron,
I heard from the Griffin Library that last night's event was "very well received." No surprise here! They were very pleased to sell 14 copies of CANP,
and the invoicing for that is all set. I just wanted to check in with you that that process seemed smooth and easy on your end-it's certainly a great
solution to having books available for attendees as long as you're comfortable with it (and the library is willing too, of course). Just let
me
know.
I know that I have a number of messages from you waiting for action on my part. I'll get there! Briefly, the copy to the LoC has been sent, and I am
halfway through the copyright registration form - have a question I've asked of them and am waiting on the response. Specifically, I'm trying to
figure out how best to handle Maureen's foreword. Stay tuned.
Thank you for the lovely inscription in the copy of CANP you left for me. I'm touched and gratified, as always.
Warmly,
Aimee

Thank you, Ruth and Ron, for your hospitality at the Jesup tonight and your partnership throughout the
centennial - and beyond! Dr. Epp was a star tonight and both of our organizations shared some of the glow. It
was a great turnout both in terms of numbers, and the quality of thought and interest among those in
attendance. Here's to more collaboration in the future! Many thanks, David

Much appreciation, Ron. Staff was exceedingly pleased with the evening in all ways. We know that
everyone's level of knowledge increased, and also their appreciation and respect for George.
I'm listening to the wind and rain pound on my window (and the big window is leaking again, but the
plastic is up) and the library itself is still vibrating with excitement.
Thanks,
Ruth

Dear Ron,
Good to know that you are home safely. And now I can tell you how well I thought you did on Thursday
night - you gave real-deal historiography a good name! It was a good week - one of the high points in
our "Celebrate the Past" dimension of the centennial.
I continue to give myself 30-minute reward breaks to read in the book as published.
Gratifying. I can say to my private self, at least, that those intense weeks back in May and June of 2013
were worth it. Honor to Bill for his email to several advocating FOA publication, to you for asking for my
counsel and help, and to David for hearing and understand the case made.
Onward!
Jack
