The
of the oldest national park east of the Mississippi River,
George Bucknam Dorr's seminal contributions to the
American environmental movement have gone largely
unacknowledged. Even today, those who live in or visit the
coastal Maine communities surrounding Acadia National
Park do not fully realize the scope of his achievements. This
biography is the story of Dorr's pioneering role in the
establishment and development of a unique conservation
model that dovetailed with the evolution of the US National Park Service-which shares its
2016 centennial with Acadia.
Raised in Boston as a member of New England's elite merchant class, Dorr adopted Maine's
Mount Desert Island as his home and the setting to apply the practical lessons of "Boston
Brahmin" philanthropy that tracked back to his maternal grandfather, banker and Harvard
College Treasurer Thomas Wren Ward. Yet through his finest work-the creation and

management of Acadia National Park-and through his collaborations with park co-founders
Charles W. Eliot, John D. Rockefeller Jr., and others-Dorr transformed an elitist social
inheritance into an all-consuming commitment to conservation. One hundred years after its
founding, this national treasure is visited, enjoyed, and beloved by millions every year.
The first biography of George B. Dorr ever written, "Creating Acadia National Park: the
Biography of George Bucknam Dorr" is based on painstaking research both in the US and
abroad, including federal, state, and private archives. Newly-discovered and uncatalogued
sources are supplemented by in-person interviews. This work will appeal to general and
scholarly readers who care about the philanthropic roots of land conservation, those
interested in what has been celebrated as "America's Best Idea," and above all, those who
know and love Acadia National Park.
RONALD H. EPP, Ph.D. is a historian and professor of philosophy with scholarly publishing
and academic library administration experience. His research over the last two decades into
the Massachusetts families that influenced the development of conservation philanthropy
has resulted in publications and talks to regional and national organizations.

Hi Karen,
That's wonderful! Thanks for your enthusiasm.
I'm cc'ing Ron Epp here to "introduce" you and so that we can work together to pick a date. I have
April 7 (evening) and April 22 (morning appearance on WERU) reserved for local appearances at this
point, but Ron can give a more complete picture of his availability.
I've looked back through some notes and it looks to me that Jack Russell (Acadia Centennial co-
chair) has been engaged to speak as part of Blue Hill Heritage Trust's April series. That suggests to
me that Ron's appearance would be separate from the Trust's series.
Regarding the library's ACP status, I know that Stephanie Clement just sent a message confirming
your acceptance yesterday; it may have crossed paths with your note to me. We're so glad to have
you on board! Yes, you can now create a listing on the centennial website. Go to ACP Internet Tools
& Registration to "create a new partner." Don't hesitate to ask me if you have any difficulty.
All the best,
Aimee

Hello Aimee,
Yes, we would definitely be interested in Mr. Epp giving a program about his book! I will contact the
Blue Hill Heritage Trust to see if they've already booked their three programs in April, or if there is
still an opportunity for us to co-sponsor with them for this program. Are most dates still available in
April?
Thanks for noting that we have been added to the ACP partner roster. Unfortunately I can't find
our name on the list- did I miss it? ( I sent the paperwork several weeks ago but have not heard
anything since). And am I correct that we should create our own "presence" wth our logo, etc. once
we have been added?
Best regards,

Subject: author appearance question
Hi Rich,
I'm wondering if you can tell me who is the best person to speak with about a possible author appearance at
the BHPL. I'm working (through Friends of Acadia) to publish the first comprehensive biography of George B.
Dorr, the "father of Acadia," coincident with next year's Acadia Centennial.
The book will be out in April 2016 and the author, Ron Epp, is available to do readings/talks in the Acadia
region both in April and in August, and likely other times as well. Ron mentioned that he knew you to some
degree when you were in Southwest Harbor.
It's a fantastic book for anyone interested in the park, or land conservation in general. I believe I recently saw
the BHPL added to the roster of Acadia Centennial Partners, at which I thought you might be interested in
hosting an appearance by Ron. Blue Hill Heritage Trust is also an ACP and I wonder if they might be interested
in-at least-mentioning it to their membership as the book examines how the land trust movement is

Attached is a page that tells a bit more about the book.
Thanks for your thoughts.
