Introduction and Notes to Catalogue of The Exhibition
In
the 1850s photography came of age with the introduction of the collodion wet plate
process. Cumbersome and difficult as the method was, it combined the clarity of the
daguerreotype with the reproducibility of the calotype, thereby eclipsing these two earlier
phases of photography. For the first time in the history of image making, in an age of
European colonial expansionism, the world could be brought back home in small yet exact
replica, without the inherently untrustworthy mediation of the artist's hand. Photography
was fact, magically transfixed through the mediums of silver and light. There was nothing
a secular and acquisitive civilization appreciated more than such a comparatively cheap and
instantaneous means of appropriation. Thus in the 1850s and 1860s the first generation of
professional itinerant photographers came into being. They photographed the world's
wonders, from Rome to Cairo, from the mysterious Orient hitherto hidden from European
eyes, to the upper reaches of the Nile.
It could be said that no such thing as a "bad" photographer existed during this period.
A process of harsh selection militated against their survival. Glass plates were heavy to
carry; the wet plate process involved arduous yet delicate darkroom work in the field.
Cameras were large and cumbersome; travel was difficult and often dangerous. The
weight of glass and the difficulties of transportation alone were enough to insure a high
standard of quality. No photographer was going to climb the Himalayas, dodge cannon
balls in the Crimean War, or explore the outposts of colonial rule unless he could be sure
he would have something worthy to show for it when he returned home. The rewards
were sweet both personally and financially. Queen Victoria was only the highest ranking
of photography's many enthusiastic collectors. Countless views from every corner of the
globe were printed and sold. Exhibitions were numerous. Wealth and fame came to those
who persevered.
However, such a state of affairs was not to last. As early as the 1860s, small
photographs intended for mounting in albums, the forerunners of our modern
post cards, began to supplant the large-scale albumen prints. Their increasing
popularity diminished the sale of the more expansive and expensive views. Many of the
first photographers, including Roger Fenton, passed into retirement rather than reduce
their magnificent vistas to fit commercial requirements. Others like Frith, Alinari, and
Braun, turned businessmen and managed the dissemination of countless lesser
photographs and art reproductions for the tourist trade. From here it was only a step, with
the introduction of dry plates, roll film, and hand-held cameras, to the lucrative
phenomenon of hordes of amateur photographers encouraged by George Eastman to "just
push the button" while Kodak did the rest.
In the modern age photographic imagery has infiltrated every aspect of our lives.
Photography's ubiquity has ill-served its early practitioners, rendering their efforts difficult
to appreciate given our image saturation and familiarity with Kodak Instamatics and
Polaroid SX-70's. In Caroline Tappan's time no such problem of appreciation existed.
Photographic discrimination was not an issue. Traveling abroad in the mid-19th century,
she could collect only what photographs were available-the large, wet plate, albumen
prints made by a pioneering generation of photographers. These images possess a technical
excellence and a pristine clarity of vision which have never been surpassed.
