I got your letter with great pleasure at seeing your
hand again and coming into touch with you. I have just started work
once more on the old Ward letters and hope to make good progress
with them.
I have not much to tell in answer to your questions;
they relate to periods not told of in the letters.
William Ward, after the period covered by the auto-
biography telling of his early years your father printed, followed
a seafaring life to the end of the century, making voyages, to the
East Indies or elsewhere as occasion was, as captain of merchant
vessels owned in Salem and part owner in some along with his brother-
in-law, William Gray, and others. On his last voyage, made to India
in 1799, he took our grandfather with him, a boy of twelve. After
that, retiring from the sea, he took the presidency of a bank in
Boston, removing from Salem along with William Gray, Francis Gray,
and others of that group, to Medford, on account of the bitter feelings
in Salem of the Federalist time caused by the Embargo. He used to
drive each day in a buggy from Medford to his bank when your father
and my mother were children in the Park Street house. And it was for
them at that time that he wrote the autobiography.
Grandfather Ward, also, followed the sea from the time
he made the first voyage with his father on, sailing on vessels

owned by his father and William Gray, and others, as mate, supercargo,
captain, till he retired from it in his early twenties to go into
business as a merchant in New York with his relation, Jonathan Goodhue.
As he had his family with him in New York, he wrote
few letters at that period that have been preserved. He looked back
on it as a time of strenuous activity and no little anxiety but he
was successful financially to a point that enabled him in 1816 to
purchase Number 3 Park Street and return to Boston to live on what
he then considered to be a competence, and to devote himself to public
interests and work and the care of his property. Of this period also
there are few letters, these mainly to his father.
A dozen years or so after he had established himself
in Park Street he made the trip to England which resulted in his
organizing the Baring business in America and taking on its agency.
During the years in Boston between 1816, when he pur-
chased the Park Street house, returning from New York, and 1828,
when he made his trip to England, he seems to have formed some
association of a partnership nature with Mr. Ropes, Salem friend and
contemporary, under the firm name of Ropes and Ward, trading with
India. This appears in some letters written by William Ward, Junior,
on a trip to Calcutta in 1819-1820 with Mr. Ropes, visiting the
Mediterranean on the way and sailing around Africa. Mr. Ropes, I am
under the impression, was the active member of the firm, leaving
grandfather leisure to devote himself to public affairs. He wrote
papers on education in the Boston schools, became treasurer of Harvard

College, one of the founders and treasurer of the Boston Athenaeum,
and wrote letters for publication in the Boston Daily Advertiser
of which his friend, Nathan Hale - a member of the dining club in which
he always took so great an interest - was editor.
He never held,
or sought, any position of a political character, but he was an
active supporter of Mr. Webster, contributing to and helping raise
among Boston merchants the funds that enabled him to continue on at
Washington.
Breaking away from the old Presbyterian faith he joined
the Unitarian Church and became one of Dr. Channing's principal
supporters, much to the disturbance of his father at that time as an
exchange of old letters shows - contrary to the impression your
father had, as in his book, who thought that William Ward himself was
one of those who led the way in the new movement. And he formed a
library of the English classics and books of note of his own time
which was divided among your father, Uncle George and my mother, after
he died, each taking choice in rotation. He loved the best in books,
in furniture, and all else that came into his range.
As I go on with the old letters I shall be able to tell
you more, but what they tell is scattering and fragmentary, giving
glimpses only here and there, as separation called for letters and
chance preserved them
With most affectionate remembrance
Yours sincerely,

Dear Tom:
Continuing to delve into my box of old letters
I have come upon these which I enclose, written by your
mother. I have not read them but send them to you to
read and keep.
The letters I am now at work upon go back to an
early period, written in part by William Ward, in part
by William Gray, with others written home by grandfather
when on his early voyages.
His father, William Ward, took him with him to
Calcutta, sailing from New York in January 1797. They
were gone for more than a year, returning to New York in
March, 1798. He sailed again at the end of 1800 on a voy-
age with Captain Dalling -- Darling your father has it in
his book -- going first to Portsmouth, England, and thence
to Russia, where opportunity was made for him to visit St.
Petersburg while the ship was loading. On this trip he
had no official status but was sent to learn. The next
voyage he made -- to India again -- he went out as second
mate under Capt. Dalling; on the next voyage, as I read
in a letter written by William Gray to Captain Dalling, he
was first mate. On the next voyage he had charge as captain.
This was in 1804, when he was eighteen.
As he was only ten years old when he left Salem
with his father to go to New York by stage to take the
ship, owned by William Gray, and was away on that voyage
some sixteen months, and as he sailed again on his first
trip with Capt. Dalling the autumn of 1800, the only chance
he can have had for schooling, apart from what his father
taught him upon the voyage to Calcutta, must have been be-
fore he was ten years old or during the period between his
return from that voyage and his first voyage with Capt. Dal-
ling.
I will write you more as I come on it.
Yours affectionately,
GBD-0

PREFACE
T
HE letter of my grandfather, William Ward,
addressed to his grandchildren, and my own let-
ter or memoir, addressed to mine three quarters of a
century later, cover a space of one hundred and thirty-
nine years. Two more such lives would go back of the
first settlement of Massachusetts. We cannot remedy
the want of the earlier record, but I must hope that
some one of the grandchildren I address will, in the
course of the present century, follow our example, and
hand on the family traditions to later generations.
I have given in my narrative such an account as I
could of my grandfather (who in his memoir calls
himself William Candid) as I remember him. He was
the son of William Ward, born 1736, died 1767, and
Ruth Putnam, born 1740, died 1786. This William
is the one of whom my grandfather speaks as being
known by the name of "the Peace and Goodwill of the
family." Only one letter of his has been kept, which will
be found in an appendix. His wife, Ruth Putnam, of
whom frequent mention is made in my grandfather's

memoir, to whom and to whose memory he was all his
