Pat has forwarded your request to me. I have attached a high resolution scan in this reply, but even with descreening and some

Pat can fill you in on our publication nomenclature.
Let me know if you have any problems with the image.

To: patricia burdick
Dear Ms. Burdick:
Next March The Friends of Acadia will publish my biography of Acadia National Park founder, George B. Dorr.
In assembling permisions and the requisite 300 dpi images of about thirty photographs that will be included,
I write to ask whether you could provide an image from the serial In the Maine Woods, published by the Bangor and Aroostook
Railroad.
Call number F25.1585 1926 This volume contains (pp. 94-99) an article on Mr. Dorr's ascent of Mt. Katahdin with then Governor R.
Brewster.
I have a copy of the P.R. Shorey article but of poor quality and I would like to have the photograph on the lead page scanned for
inclusion in the book:
"Viewing the World from Katahdin's Summit." The image quality leaves much to be desired, but is all we've got.
In 2006 I retired from academic library administration and have been working on this biography since then. Please let me know at
your earliest convenience if this request is within your purview and what fees with be associated with this request.
Thank you.

Hi Dr. Epp,
3/2/16
I
sent two permissions emails your way through the Portal1791 system earlier this morning, which hopefully
will have reached you! Gavin W. Kleespies is our Director of Programs here at the MHS; here is both his email
(gkleespies@masshist.org) and his phone number (617-646-0515) if you'd like to discuss a program idea. Let
me know if I can help with anything else!

Thank you for helping me through this process. I registered and completed permission

It appears that I have may have requested more than permissions which was not my intent.
My apologies

My manuscript concentrates on Dorr's lineage in the early two chapters and I would happily

Subject: RE: Permissions Request
Dear Dr. Epp,
Congratulations on your forthcoming book, and thank you for contacting the Massachusetts Historical Society
to confirm citation/quotation permission for materials held here in the MHS collection! We will be happy to
grant it. I apologize for the lag in response; our Librarian, Elaine Heavey (née Grublin) is currently out on
maternity leave. Since you last visited, the library has implemented a new automated request system
(Portal1791) which we use for all requests including permissions.
To initiate use permission requests for the three collections, you can take the following steps:
1. Create a Portal1791 account here: https://aeon.masshist.org/
2. Open the collection guides for each collection, which I'll link to:
Thomas Wren Ward papers
Ward family papers
Endicott family papers
3. Click on the red "Request Items" button at the top of the guides.
4. Check any red "request" box. NOTE: the MHS grants citation permission at the collection level so you
do not need to select multiple boxes for multiple items or provide detailed sample citations.
5. Click on "Continue" at the bottom of your screen for each.
6. In the pop-up windows, select "Request Reproductions" and complete the form for "citation/quotation"
permission.
7.
Submit your requests (you may need to login to your Portal1791 account to complete your request if
your session has timed out).
There is no fee, and as there are no restrictions on the collections notification of use permission granted will be
delivered via email to the email on record for your Portal1791 account.
I
will keep an eye out for any incoming requests. In the meantime let me know if you have any follow-up
questions!
Sincerely,
Sabina

Greetings,
I have completed the Aeon New User Registration Form prior to this inquiry about the permission
process regarding publication of references to the Ward-Perkins Family Papers.
In April 2007 I contacted Ms. Russell who collaborated with Tony Lewis in providing me with
photocopies of select Ward-Perkins Family Papers. The fruit of this inquiry will shortly be realized
with the March 2016 publication of Creating Acadia National Park: The Biography of George B. Dorr.
Mr. Dorr was a Ward family descendant and the founder of Acadia National Park..
The not-for-profit conservation organization, The Friends of Acadia in Bar Harbor, Maine, will
publish roughly 1,500 paperback copies.
I have quoted sparsely from the collection and all quotes are fewer than 25 words.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Dr. Epp,
Greetings from the Harvard University Archives. Thank you for your patience while we prepared this
information for you. We have been operating for several months with less than a full complement of staffing,
and some backlogs have developed in our remote reference responses.
In addition, our in-house scanner has not been working for a few weeks. Therefore, we are unable to send you
two separate photographs at this time. Attached please find a scan of page 86, at 600 dpi tiff/jpg. There is no
charge for these scans.
If you would like to proceed with a photo order for higher resolution scans for publication, here are
instructions. Money will be involved and these copy orders take several weeks. The order will be completed by
our in-house service bureau, Imaging Services at Widener Library, which has implemented a new fulfillment
service:
1. Follow this link to https://aeon.hul.harvard.edu/ and set up an account for yourself.
2.
When your account is in place, follow the link to "Photoduplication Request."
3.
Fill in the online "New Photoduplication Request" form as follows.
a. Title/Collection Name: Photographs of George Bucknam Dorr
b. Library: select Harvard University Archives from the dropdown menu
C. Call Number: HUD 274.50
d. Volume/Box/Folder/Item: n/a
e. In the "Reproduction Details" section, follow the link for Studio Digital Photography for a
description of services and prices. (Your order falls in the "up to 19" X 25.5" category and the
cost is $30 per image.)
f. Desired Format: select "Studio Digital Photography" from the dropdown menu
g. Shipping Preference: select "Online Delivery" from the dropdown menu
h. Do NOT click the "For Publication?" box
i.
In "My Notes," enter something like "I need high-resolution TIFF digital copies from a bound
volume of George Bucknam Dorr, Class of 1874 from the Harvard College Class of 1874 50th
Anniversary Report. Senior Class Portrait and 50th Anniversary Photo. Eleventh Report. 1924.

Then we (Archives) will be notified by the service bureau that your order has been paid and we will
bring the photos to the Photo Studio.
When you submit the online order form, Imaging Services staff will reply with cost and delivery information.

Dear Sean,
What a pleasant surprise, a Reading PA transplant to Massachusetts. Well, Sean, I grew up in Allentown, married my high school
sweetheart after college and began a career migration to Rochester, Buffalo, Annapolis, Memphis, Hartford, Nashua, and retirement
back to PA where life was more affordable. I became familiar again with Reading when I visited there repeatedly while my best friend
was director of the Albright College library--in the early 90's. Both he and I earned doctorates in philosophy, taught for years, and in
mid-life went back for an MLS which led to library director positions, interrupted by a stint working as managing editor for the
Association of College and Research Libraries
My research for the Dorr biography led me to the splendid archival resources of the MHS, Harvard, NEHGS, BPL, Bostonian Society, etc.
etc. My admiration for archivists knows no bounds, especially since I learned some of the skills as a researcher and not within an
academic structure.
Before I sign off this all too chatty email, I routinely drive through Myerstown heading north from here to I-78. It is a mere fifteen
minutes away from the Cornwall Manor Retirement Community where I live. If you are visiting, give me a call and perhaps we can meet
and break bread together.
Again, thank you for your assistance.
All the Best,

Hi Ronald,
Yes, you have permission to use and publish in Acadia National Park: The Biography of George Bucknam Dorr the ca. 1892 photographic
portrait of Charles Eliot, by Elmer Chickering, from the DCR Archives collections. Please use the credit line, "Photograph by Elmer
Chickering, Courtesy DCR Archives".
Is the digital image that I recently provided to Alison at the TTOR ARC of sufficient quality for your purpose?
I normally request that one (1) complimentary copy of any printed work that uses our images be provided to the DCR Archives. However,
I
will waive that request since it is a single image for a publication not directly associated with DCR's history.
By the way, I noticed you are living in Lebanon, PA. I am from Reading, PA, and my mother currently resides in nearby Myerstown.

Dear Mr. Epp,
Thank you for contacting us regarding the use of an image from our collection in your monograph. I have located the original photograph
and can have it digitized to create a high resolution tif file suitable for publication.
The fees would include an image production fee of $25.00, and a small permission fee based on the number of copies to be
printed, assuming it is a not for profit publication.
Just let me know the title and publication information and I can get the photography and paperwork started.

Marie,
WOW again! What responsiveness!! Unscanned images of Dorr and Acadia?
I recall talking a decade ago to Tom DuRant,
the NPS photo archivist who has retired, and he mentioned this---but nothing came of it.
That historical image archive has apparently been unchanged for years and years.
Ever so anxious to see what he uncovers. And please send me Wade's contact information
so I can email him a personal thank you.

I
have sent in unanswered online requests once a month for the last three months to no avail.
Now with a March 2016 publication date ahead of me I must contrive an alternative

The images in question are cataloged as HPC-001098 and HPC-000050. Both were taken

Ron,
Yes- we have prints of both photos. The print of the tree planting has the poem on the reverse (book-plate style label). The photo of
Dorr swimming is not labeled. We do not have a record of where either one came from. They are not part of the glass lantern slide
collection, but I am attaching a list of those for you for future reference.
It would certainly be interesting to learn more about what you have come up with in regards to Dorn and Abbe. We are still working
on deciding what we will be doing during the centennial, and do not really have a budget for centennial-specific programs, but
perhaps if you are going to be in the area at some point, we could piggy-back on that to offer something!
Thanks,

Dear Ron,
Attached is the Abbe's image use agreement form, as well as out image use guidelines. For publication use, assuming interior use and
English-language rights only, the use fee would be $50 per image. I do not have high-resolution scans of either image, so there would
be a $35 fee for scanning and providing the files, preferable using either DropBox or Google Drive file sharing.
If you (or Aimee) could fill out the relevant details on the agreement and return it, I will provide you with the signed agreement. Once
payment is received, I will get the images scanned and shared.
Thanks!
