Spirit of Acadia
To Lisa Horsch Clark
Lisa,
Regarding the Spirit of Acadia and the FOA Annual Meeting, it surprised me to review the hundreds of pages
of documentation that I have kept about this two year long process. Our first meeting
was November 15, 2004 included 30 people (Sheridan, Dave Manski, Patrick Chasse, Ron Beard, Ted Koffman, Marla,
Sue Leiter, Paul Haertel, Tom St. Germain, Stephanie, Deb Dyer, Alice, Elizabeth, and myself, etc.) and two months later
we
met again at Park HQ, this time with 20 participants, though a mailing list of 50 interested
parties and organizations was developed. "Spirit of Acadia" was selected as the most resonate name for this
volunteer initiative to celebrate the men and women who inspired and created ANP; I recall
several participants who wondered whether our efforts would have value for a 2016 centennial.
Alice Long was especially keen on turning our efforts into an annual series of events celebrating the Founders.
The Friends of Acadia Journal published a one page article (Summer 2005, pages 10 & 22) written by Alice
that outlined the activities which drew attention to the park founders. In addition to a 4th of July themed
"Spirit of Acadia" parade, exhibits and talks took place at the Abbe, BHHS, MDIHS, COA, Jesup, NEHPL, YMCA, MDIBL,
and a "Founders Day Celebration" on the Bar Harbor Village Green with remarks by Ken Olson, Sheridan,
Ted Koffman, Joshua Torrance, Ron Epp. Ed Winterberg, Patrick Chasse, and Dennis Damon. The Islander
was especially generous in promoting Spirit of Acadia activities.
Hope this is helpful.
Note: The 2005 'Spirit of Acadia'
Ron
collaboration was a preamble to
the 2016 Acadia National Park/
NPS Centennial.
