CENTENNIAL
"THE MAKING OF A NATIONAL PARK"
Monday, September 26, Amber Room, 6:30 p.m.
Its National Parks are one of America's greatest
treasures. This year we celebrate the 100th birth-
day of the National Park Service; the first na-
tional park, Yellowstone, was designated in 1872,
but it wasn't until 1916 that the government es-
tablished the National Park Service to manage the
growing number of parks.
Also established in 1916, Acadia is the oldest
national park east of the Mississippi, located on
Mount Desert Island along the coast of Maine.
Ronald H. Epp, Ph.D., is a historian and pro-
fessor of philosophy living in Lebanon, PA. His
research into the development of conservation
philanthropy resulted in the publication of his
book, "Creating Acadia National Park: The Bio-
graphy of George Buckham Dorr".
In honor of the centennials of both the Na-
tional Park Service and Acadia, and in conjunc-
tion with his new book, Dr. Epp is doing a number
of readings and talks throughout the East. On
September 27, he will speak at the Theodore Roos-
evelt Inaugural National Historic Site, one of the
more than 400 sites in the National Park System.

Although he is known as the "Father of Acadia" and a founder of the oldest national park east of the Mississippi
River, George Bucknam Dorr's seminal contributions to the American environmental movement have gone
largely unacknowledged. This is the story of Dorr's pioneering role in the establishment and development of a
unique conservation model that dovetailed with the evolution of the US National Park Service.
Raised in Boston as a member of New England's elite merchant class, Dorr adopted Maine's Mount Desert
Island as his home and the setting to apply the practical lessons of "Boston Brahmin" philanthropy, transforming
an elitist social inheritance into an all-consuming commitment to conservation.
The first biography of Dorr ever written, Creating Acadia National Park is based on painstaking research both in
the US and abroad, including federal, state, and private archives. Newly-discovered and uncatalogued sources
are supplemented by in-person interviews.
