You may recall our extensive correspondence in 2010 regarding several dozen letters you
held in your archive between Lady Rosalind Howard and Mary Gray Ward Dorr, the mother

that time to send you a copy of the publication. And so on this centennial of both Acadia and the National Park Service, the fruits of our labors is now in the public domain.
Creating Acadia National Park: The Biography of George B. Dorr was published in April

Dear Anna,
After a lapse of four years I write once again to let you and Christopher Ridgway know that I had the good fortune to
attend the 11 April lecture given by Mr. Simon Howard at Winterthur Museum and Gardens in Wilmington, Delaware.
It was a splendid event attended by more than two hundred people who were enthralled by his nearly conversational
talk and sparkling images of the Howard estate. We did not get to speak directly but he ably fielded my query
about the importance of the curatorial work being done by Dr. Ridgway. It whetted my appetite to visit the estate within
the year.
I completed The Making of Acadia National Park. Of course, it contains ample coverage of the Charles H. Dorr and
Howard family interactions and extended correspondence. A conservation organization, The Friends of Acadia
(www.friendsofacadia.org), will publish the biography of George B. Dorr in April 2016 as part of the centennial
celebrations of the establishment of both the park and the National Park Service.
I'm now deep in editorial revisions and write in part to ask if an image of the 1865 portrait of Rosalind Howard
displayed in Dr. Ridgway's You Tube introduction to "Heroines & Harridans" can be secured for inclusion in my book.
If so, what is the process?
When a proofed copy of the chapter dealing with the Howard family is ready, I will send it to you to substitute
for my earlier draft. A copy of the published biography will follow later.
Please take note of my new contact information.
All the Best,

Dear Ron
Many thanks for your extensive transcription and in-depth notes on the Dorn letters. I have just printed it out for Chris to read - he is currently
researching the 9th Earl and Countess for our forthcoming exhibition on Rosalind (as well as a lecture later in the year entitled Travelling
Howards') and will, I'm sure, find it all most interesting.
In answer to your questions:
There are unfortunately no family diaries covering May-July 1876, nor are there any itineraries of family travel between the summer of 1876 and
1878.

I have checked our correspondence indexes and cannot find any mention of Julia Ward Howe.
It is not possible to confirm Mary Dorr's concerns for Mary Howard's mental health. As yet, Chris has not been able to go through the
correspondence which would refer to Mary's health. This is something which he will be doing as part of the above research and he has said he
will pass on any relevant information to you as he finds it.
As for an opinion on whether the 9th Earl and Countess may have had good reasons for not wishing to entrust their children to the care of Mary
Dorr, Chris says that it is too early to tell! As above, he hopes that he might be able to answer this question later in the year when he has done
further research.
Thank you once again for all that you have sent through.

Subject: Dorr Letters from Castle Howard
Dear Anna,
Attached is a transcription of the Dorr Family letters to George and Rosalind Howard covering the sixteen years between September
13, 1876 and February 12, 1893. With the exception of two letters, thirty-one of the thirty-three letters cover the two and one-half
year period between September 1876 and May 1879.
The dates and sites for some correspondence is suspect, largely due to incomplete description by the author (Mary Gray Ward Dorr
authored all but one letter, the exception being the November 7, 1877 letter from her son, George Bucknam Dorr). Through
examination of the content and comparisons with more clearly defined correspondence, a reliable chronology has been developed.
If there are Howard family diaries that cover May, June, and July of 1876, the dating of the arrival and departure of the Dorr
family Naworth Castle houseguests could be determined. This is an important historical issue since the length of that stay is only
described by George Bucknam Dorr, the surviving son of Charles and Mary Dorr, as a "lengthy stay" following the mid-May 1876
death of his brother William in New York City.
Are there any itineraries of Howard family travel during the two years between the summer of 1876 and 1878? Since much of Mary
Dorr's correspondence relates to efforts to visit Castle Naworth or to rendezvous elsewhere, such information would be useful to me
to me for Mary frequently writes as if she is trying to induce the "homebody" Howard's to travel abroad.
On a related note, one can't avoid the depth and breadth of Mary's emotional language toward the Howard's, thankfulness (for their
compassion following William Dorr's death (a fact she nowhere mentions!) and appreciation for their value to her (Mary's self-
absorption is most conspicuous, failing in most letters to even mention her son and husband). And there is also the quite
surprising
presumption on Mary's part that George Howard would not be offended at being asked--by her-- to serve as an artistic middleman
between herself and Burne Jones in finalizing to her satisfaction the final artistic qualities of one of his paintings ("Hope") at the
1877 opening of the Grosvenor Gallery. I've had little success so far in trying to track down provenance information on the 'Hope'
watercolor.
I found it most revealing that six of the letters make reference to Julia Ward Howe, the American suffragist who was on a "tour" of
the Continent with her daughter during 1877 and 1878. Mary Dorr hosted Julia in Europe and cared for her when Julia was ill in
Italy. Mary Dorr and Julia in their teens and early adulthood (late 1830's) had been the closest of friends and Mary's emotional
language in the surviving letters (in the Massachusetts Historical Society) bears a marked similarity to what she says about Rosalind
forty years later! One wonders if there had been interactions between the Howard family and Julia Ward Howe at this time?
As I mentioned earlier, it would also be helpful to know whether Mary Dorr's concerns for Mary Howard's mental health could be
confirmed. She may have been projecting from the protracted mental difficulties that her son George B. Dorr was experiencing at
this time. I am left with the impression that Rosalind and George Howard may well have had good reasons for not wishing to
entrust their children to Mary Dorr given the overall character of the letters. Is that your impression as well?
Well, I did not expect to write at such length. I hope you will be able to read the 21-page transcription in the foreseeable future

and if so I would much appreciate reading your insights and impressions--and hearing about any other matters that I raised in the

Dear Ron
Many thanks for your e-mail. I'm delighted you have found the letters both interesting and insightful and will be excited to read
your reflections and queries. Chris Ridgway is currently on holiday but I will speak to him about Mary Howard on his return next
week. He will be able to pinpoint any documents in our archive which might refer to her health and I will dig these out to study.
I'm delighted that you were able to piece together the chronology of the letters. I'm afraid that I just didn't have the necessary
time to be able to complete such a jigsaw of events and conversations! I rather fear that my own notes may have been
somewhat erroneous!
I look forward to hearing from you again and will be in touch next week with any further information which we might have to
offer.

Subject: Update Dorr Letters from Castle Howard
Dear Anna,
Just a brief note to let you know that I have read the copies of the Dorr correspondence to George and Rosalind Howard and
transcribed the content into your outline. A valuable experience!
The content and cross references enabled me to arrange the letters chronologically. In the next couple of days I'll polish off some
rough edges and send the transcribed content to you as an email attachment. I'll also send some personal reflections and queries.
I hope that you will find therein some new insights into the Carlisle family as seen from Mary Dorr's correspondence over
seventeen years. I know that my appreciation for her has grown, my understanding of the motivation for their travels has
matured, and I better understand how George Bucknam Dorr's health issues and relationship to his parents helped shaped his
character.
Would your archive contain any documents that relate to Mary Howard's health during her teen and early adult years? I ask
because of remarks that Mrs. Dorr makes about therapies for Mary Howard in her letter from The Hague on October 10, 1877.
With best wishes to you and Dr. Ridgeway.

to say, I quickly opened it and scanned a couple of the letters.

the content but I've been adding to the content of your partial transcription. I am working toward a

appreciative. My thanks again to Dr. Ridgway! Your suggestion to keep one another in mind as we progress with
our research is most welcomed.
It will take me at least a week to complete my rendering. I'll send you then an altered copy of your transcription
and a summary of what I've learned anew about the Howard and Dorr family.

Dear Anna Louise,
I have heard back from Berkshire historian Cornelia B. Gilder after asking her about the Howard family visit to
Lenox in 1906. She writes that "the Dixeys were Ellen Sturgis (Tappan) Dixey [1849-1924] and her husband

Richard Cowell Dixey. They were Bostonians and lived in the Tappan House built by Ellen's mother Caroline in
1867 [See Gilder's chapter on the Tappan family in her Hawthorne's Lenox (History Press, 2008)]" I've asked Ms.
Gilder to research local newspapers for the three week period between mid-October 1906 and the first week in
November. I'll also make e-mail inquiries at the Berkshire Atheneaum to see whether there are reports of the
Howard family visit. Finally, Ms. Gilder has a local friend, Mary Howard, who is a descendent of that branch of the
Carlisle Howards. She will contact her about our interest. Perhaps you have already been in contact with her.

Dear Ron
Please accept my apologies for not having been back in touch before now. We are opening our
new exhibition, about the life of the 9th Countess of Carlisle, on Thursday and needless to say
things are frantically busy at the moment! I am on holiday next week but intend to read over all
that you have sent me during that time.
Meantime, I thought I should put you in touch with Alison Brisby who, until Christmas, was the
Assistant Curator here. Alison is currently undertaking a huge project involving the paintings of
George Howard, the 9th Earl of Carlisle. Her extensive research will culminate in both the
publication of a book and an exhibition of the 9th Earl's works - to take place at both the National
Gallery, London and Tullie House Art Gallery in Carlisle. I spoke to Alison briefly about your own
research and it occurred to me that I really should be putting you in touch with each other.
I will attach your latest transcription to an e-mail for her and am copying her into this e-mail so
that you have e-mail addresses for each other.
