SOME DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM BUCKNAM OF CHARLESTOWN AND MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS WILLIAM1 BUCKNAM was born in England about 1602, the date being determined by the fact that he deposed in Middlesex County Court on 25 (7) 1665 that he was about 63 years of age (Charles Henry Pope, The Pioneers of Massachusetts, [Boston, Mass., 1900], p. 77). When William arrived in this country is not known. That he was still a single man may be ascertained from the court deposition taken 16 Dec 1662 when Robert Lincoln stated "have known him, ever since he came into the Country both singal man and married man." (Middlesex County Court Records, Folio 31, 1662). There is conjecture that William came from London and that he had a brother John who married 31 December 1616 at St. Faith, London and was a member of the Merchant Tailors Guild (Robert W. Waite, Jr., Genealogical Sketches of the Waitt Family of Richmond, Virginia [1984], Vol. 3). William died at Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts 28 March 1679 (Middlesex Co. Probate, 1st Series, #3406). William first married WILKINSON, daughter of widow Prudence Wilkinson (Charles Edward Banks, The Winthrop Fleet of 1630, [Boston Mass., 1930], p. 97). It is possible that her name was Sarah, but there is no proof for it. She died prior to 3 July 1641, the date of his son Joses's birth, as William refers to him in his will as Sarah Knower's eldest son. William married secondly SARAH KNOWER, believed by some to be the daughter of Thomas Knower. They were probably married by 1640. In his will William makes it quite clear that it was through the monies that came from Sarah that he was able to purchase most of his real estate. He says: "the estate, whereby I purchased all my lands came unto me by my wife Sara." She may be the Sarah who was baptized at St. Clements', London, England 28 September 1628 (George Walter Chamberlain, additional note furnished 26 Feb 1942 for his manuscript "Malden Genealogies to the Year 1800", [1935-1936], in possession of The Malden Public Library, Malden, Mass., p. 403). She could also be the "Sara Knore" who arrived in this country aboard the "Abigail" in July 1635 (John Camden Hotten, The Original Lists of Persons of Quality, rpt. [Baltimore, Md., 1968], p. 92). In 1656 the Middlesex County Court Files show "Sarah Bucknam, ae. 34, servant to Mrs. Glover" (Middlesex County Court Records, Folio 2, 1656). Sarah's father was found dead in a small boat laden with wood on the Mistick River about 9 November 1641 (Thomas Bellows Wyman, The Genealogies & Estates of Charlestown, rpt. Somersworth, NH [1982], p. 592, hereafter Wyman). One of the early residents of Charlestown, William is recorded as having property within the town limits in 1638. The Charlestown Land Records show where he possessed "One Dwelling house with a garden plott, butting northeast upon the streeteway, and bounded on the southeast by Edward Carrington" (Boston City Document No. 39, A. Report of The Record Commissioners containing Charlestown Land Records, 1638-1802 [Boston, Mass., 1883], p. 66). In 1649 he purchased from Francis Willoughby 20 acres on the Mystic side. JOSES3 BUCKNAM (Joses2, William1) was probably born at Charlestown, Massachusetts in January of 1666/7 (Wyman, p. 147) and he died at Malden, Middlesex County 5 April 1741 (Malden VRs, p. 333). He married at either Boxford or Charlestown 24 February 1690/1 HANNAH PEABODY of Boxford (Roger D. Joslyn, comp. & ed., Vital Records of Charlestown Massachusetts to the Year 1850, [Boston Mass., 1984], p. 151, hereafter Charlestown VRs). The service was performed by Mr. Capen, Minister of Topsfield. Hannah was the daughter of Capt. John and Sarah ( ) Peabody and the granddaughter of Lt. Francis Peabody. Joses, in his will dated 8 April 1736, left the house and ample supplies of food and wood for her sustenance as long as "she shall continue in my name." She also received the great Bible and the silver tankard. His son Nathan, daughters Hannah Sargent, Judith Parkins [sic], Ruth Richardson, Martha Bucknam and Elizabeth Bucknam each received legacies as did his grandchildren James and Mary Barrit (sic). He was baptised at Topsfield, Massachusetts 30 October 1692 (Vital Records of Topsfield, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849 [Topsfield, Mass., 1903], 1:21, hereafter Topsfield VRs). He is buried beside his wife in the Bell Rock Cemetery. His marriage intentions were published at Boston 27 August 1713 to PHEBE TUTTLE (Edward W. McGlenen, comp., Boston Marriages from 1700 to 1809, rpt., [Baltimore Md., 1977], 1:93, hereafter Boston Marriages). Phebe, the daughter of Edward and Abigail ( ) Tuttle, was born at Boston 12 August 1692 and she died 5 July 1767. Phebe's son Aaron was appointed administrator of her estate. (Middlesex Co. Probate, First Series, #3397). Joses was a lifelong resident of Malden, living in the family homestead that had come down through the generations. A farmer and weaver, he owned the weaving shop that had belonged to his father. The shop later was to be known as Barrett's Dye Shop, located in Malden Centre. Joses died intestate and the inventory of his estate, dated 3 April 1758, mentioned several pieces of real estate, including the Weave Shop and his homestead. When William arrived in this country is not known. That he was still a single man may be ascertained from the court deposition taken 16 Dec 1662 when Robert Lincoln stated "have known him, ever since he came into the Country both singal man and married man." (Middlesex County Court Records, Folio 31, 1662). There is conjecture that William came from London and that he had a brother John who married 31 December 1616 at St. Faith, London and was a member of the Merchant Tailors Guild (Robert W. Waite, Jr., Genealogical Sketches of the Waitt Family of Richmond, Virginia [1984], Vol. 3). William died at Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts 28 March 1679 (Middlesex Co. Probate, 1st Series, #3406). William first married WILKINSON, daughter of widow Prudence Wilkinson (Charles Edward Banks, The Winthrop Fleet of 1630, [Boston Mass., 1930], p. 97). It is possible that her name was Sarah, but there is no proof for it. She died prior to 3 July 1641, the date of his son Joses's birth, as William refers to him in his will as Sarah Knower's eldest son. William married secondly SARAH KNOWER, believed by some to be the daughter of Thomas Knower. They were probably married by 1640. In his will William makes it quite clear that it was through the monies that came from Sarah that he was able to purchase most of his real estate. He says: "the estate, whereby I purchased all my lands came unto me by my wife Sara." She may be the Sarah who was baptized at St. Clements', London, England 28 September 1628 (George Walter Chamberlain, additional note furnished 26 Feb 1942 for his manuscript "Malden Genealogies to the Year 1800", [1935-1936], in possession of The Malden Public Library, Malden, Mass., p. 403). She could also be the "Sara Knore" who arrived in this country aboard the "Abigail" in July 1635 (John Camden Hotten, The Original Lists of Persons of Quality, rpt. [Baltimore, Md., 1968], p. 92). In 1656 the Middlesex County Court Files show "Sarah Bucknam, ae. 34, servant to Mrs. Glover" (Middlesex County Court Records, Folio 2, 1656). Sarah's father was found dead in a small boat laden with wood on the Mistick River about 9 November 1641 (Thomas Bellows Wyman, The Genealogies & Estates of Charlestown, rpt. Somersworth, NH [1982], p. 592, hereafter Wyman). One of the early residents of Charlestown, William is recorded as having property within the town limits in 1638. The Charlestown Land Records show where he possessed "One Dwelling house with a garden plott, butting northeast upon the streeteway, and bounded on the southeast by Edward Carrington" (Boston City Document No. 39, A. Report of The Record Commissioners containing Charlestown Land Records, 1638-1802 [Boston, Mass., 1883], p. 66). In 1649 he purchased from Francis Willoughby 20 acres on the Mystic side. The following year he purchased further land and meadows (Wyman, p. 147). On 2 April 1661, together with George DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM BUCKNAM Knower, he bought a forty acre and a fifteen acre lot of land at Malden from Capt. Edward Johnson and his wife, Susan (Middlesex Co. Deeds 9:228). William's first born son, John, taken from him by his first wife's mother, Widow Prudence Wilkinson, is referenced in the Notebook of Thomas Lechford. His notebook records the petition of "WILL" BUCKNUM of Charlestown carpenter, Sheweth that wheras his mother in Law the widdow Wilkinson keepes away from, him his sonne John Bucknum against the good will of this peticoner wch is like to be a breach of peace betweene us, Yor peticoner humbly prayeth the widdow Wilkinson may be ordered to redeliver to this peticoner his said child." (Transactions and Collections of the American Antiquarian Society, Volume VII, [1885], p. 411). That William was a carpenter by trade is referred to in several instances. In the inventory of the Estate of Mr. Nathaniel Sparrowhawk of Cambridge, who died 27 June 1647, it lists a debt to one "Wm Buckman" of Charlestown (New England Historic Genealogical Register, [1853], 7:176, hereafter Register). The court records indicate that the morals of Williams' second wife, Sarah, were not the best. She and Robert Burden drew an admonition by the court "for severall imodest and suspitious cariages in their familiarities together" (Deloraine Pendre Corey, The History of Malden [Malden, Mass., 1899], p. 119, hereafter Corey). At a Court held at Cambridge 5 (2) 1653 William bound himself to the court "that his wife shall absteine from all private meetings wth Robert Burden and Robert Burden bound himself that "he will abstaine from all familiarity or private meetings with the wife of William Bucknam" (David Pulsifer, Middlesex County Court Records, 1:37, hereafter Pulsifer). They appeared again 4 (8) 1653 and the court discharged them of their bonds "for their good abearing" (ibid., p. 45). William himself had trouble in this regard. He was convicted at a court held in Charlestown 16 December 1662 "of shameful laciviousness in his word and actions, towards sundry married women of Maulden, soliciting of them to undress & attempting their chastity. He was sentenced to pay a fine of 25£ or to be severely whipt twenty stripes, and to give 50£ bond with sufficient surities for his good behavior. He was also to pay the court costs of 1£, 11 sh, 6 p. (Pulsifer 1:272). Amongst the women who testified against him were Margaret Greene, Elizabeth Webb, Rebecca Greene, the wife of Roger Kenicutt, Hannah Barat, and Hannah Hill who testified: "he came to our house and said is your husband home I said no he said I came to see how rich he is and came roughly upon me and took hold of me one hand about me and the other he offered to put under my apron and i strove out of his arms and ran out of doors and there i sate till he was gone." (Middlesex Co. Court Records, Folio 31). JOSES2 BUCKNAM (William ¹ was born at Charlestown, Massachusetts 3 July 1641 (Wilton F. Bucknam, mss. at New England Historic Genealogical society, Boston, Mass., hereafter Wilton F. Bucknam). He was about 18 years of age in 1659 (Wyman p. 148). Joses died at Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts 24 August 1694 (Malden VRs, p. 333). Joses first married HANNAH KNOWER, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Kendall) Knower. Joses and Hannah were first-cousins. He married for a second time at Malden 1 May 1673 JUDITH WORTH (Wyman p. 148). Judith was the daughter of Lionel and Susanna (Whipple) Worth. After Joses' death, Judith married Capt. John Lynde as his third wife (ibid.). Joses served in King Philips' War under Capt. Wheeler 24 June 1676 for which service he received £01, 10 sh, 10 p (Register [1884] 38:42). He paid taxes in Charlestown 21 August 1681 (ibid. [1880] 34:274) and was made a Freeman 22 March 1689/90 (ibid. [1849] 3:347). 6. Joses' will, dated 11 August 1694, divides his real estate between his sons Joses, Samuel, John and Edward. Daughters Hannah Tuttle, Elizabeth Mellens, Judith, Sarah, and Susanna were to receive cash legacies. He also says "if my wife be now with child and it liveth to be of age it shall have equal proportion with the rest of my daughters... John and Lydia (Goffe) Sprague and i granddaughter of Ralph and Joan (Corbin) Sprague, was born at Malden 21 (7) 1670 (ibid., p. 80). She died there 17 August 1751 (ibid., p. 333). Deborah was the widow of William Mellens. Samuel was a farmer and a trader. He inherited the original family homestead that had belonged to his father and his grandfather (Corey, p. 77). Samuel served as a Lieutenant in King William's War (Register [1887] 41:209). In his will he mentions his wife, Deborah and his living children Samuel, William, Phebe Green, Abigail Blaney, Lydia Tufts, Deborah Wait and son Benjamin who he appointed 10. executor (Middlesex Co. JOSES4 BUCKNAM (Joses 3.2 William ¹ was born at Charlestown, Massachusetts 17 April 1692 (Charlestown VRs, p. 155) and he died at Malden 25 August 1757 (Gravestone). He was baptised at Topsfield, Massachusetts 30 October 1692 (Vital Records of Topsfield, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849 (Topsfield, Mass., 1903], 1:21, hereafter Topsfield VRs). He is buried beside his wife in the Bell Rock Cemetery. His marriage intentions were published at Boston 27 August 1713 to PHEBE TUTTLE (Edward W. McGlenen, comp., Boston Marriages from 1700 to 1809, rpt., [Baltimore Md., 1977], 1:93, hereafter Boston Marriages). Phebe, the daughter of Edward and Abigail ( ) Tuttle, was born at Boston 12 August 1692 and she died 5 July 1767. Phebe's son Aaron was appointed administrator of her estate. (Middlesex Co. Probate, First Series, #3397). Joses was a lifelong resident of Malden, living in the family homestead that had come down through the generations. A farmer and weaver, he owned the weaving shop that had belonged to his father. The shop later was to be known as Barrett's Dye Shop, located in Malden Centre. Joses died intestate and the inventory of his estate, dated 3 April 1758, mentioned several pieces of real estate, including the Weave Shop and his homestead. After graduating from Harvard College in 1721 at the age of nineteen, Nathan almost immediately commenced preaching in Medway. At the age of twenty-one he was ordained and installed 23 December 1724 as the second pastor of the Church of Christ. Nathan remained in this post for sixty-two years (Rev. E. O. Jameson, History of Medway, Massachusetts 1713 to 1885 [Medway Mass., 1886], p. 347). Nathan names all his children in his will except for Mary, Samuel and Sarah. "Genealogical Cross Index of the Four Volumes" In 1829 was published, by John Farmer, a Genealogica 1884 Register of the first settlers of New England. Beside the five classes of persons prominent, as Governors, Deputy-Governors Assistants, ministers in all the Colonies, and representatives i that of Massachusetts, down to 1692, it embraced graduates o Reprinted Harvard College to 1662, members of the Ancient and Honor Genealogical Publishing Company able Artillery Company, as also freemen admitted in Massa Baltimore, 1965 chusetts, alone, to this latter date, with many early inhabitant of other parts of New England and Long Island from 1620 t Genealogical Publishing Company 1675. Extensive as was the plan of that volume, the autho Baltimore, 1969 had in contemplation, as explained in his preface, calling it " al introduction to a biographical and genealogical dictionary," : more ambitious work, that should comprehend sketches of indi viduals known in the annals of New England, and "a con tinuation of eminent persons to the present time." Much to vast a project that appeared to me; and the fixing of an abso Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 65-18541 lute limit, like 1692 (the era of arrival of the new charter), fo admission of any family stocks, seemed more judicious.
